Staying in your forever home shouldn’t be overwhelming or stressful—it’s completely feasible. Stairlifts and elevators are tools designed to help you enjoy your home and live your life on your terms. No matter the reason for needing a little support on the stairs, stairlifts and elevators help increase independence, provide peace of mind, and are all-around simple solutions. Stairlifts are installed on your stairs indoors or outdoors, while elevators require a bit more modification to your home (but also increase your home’s value!). They both come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate all types of spaces and physical requirements. With a range of options, you can find a mobility device that best suits your space and unique needs.

Once your lift is installed, how do you keep it running smoothly and safely? This elevator and stairlift safety and FAQ guide answers your most common questions about maintenance, care, and safety, so you and your family can enjoy peace of mind and a life full of the adventures that come with increased mobility.

How Do I Maintain My Accessibility Lift?

Regular maintenance is essential for safe and reliable operation. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for care and upkeep, and be sure to schedule an annual inspection with your dealer. If you can’t connect with your original dealer, work with a certified technician, like through Harmar’s LiftSquad, a team of knowledgeable professionals trained to install and service all Harmar solutions. No matter your challenge or request, LiftSquad is prepared and certified to check for any unusual noises or movements, complete maintenance and service needs, and beyond. Because they are required to complete ongoing, in-depth factory training, pass annual background checks, and prioritize safety and education every step of the way, LiftSquad has you covered, so you can rest easy knowing that your straight or curved stairlift is always in top condition. LiftSquad-certified dealers are also expected to teach you and your caregivers how to keep the lift clean and how to use it properly once the installation is finished.

What Care Does My Lift Require?

When it comes to daily or weekly care of your stairlift and elevator, be sure you are completing the following:

Are There Regular Maintenance Tasks for Lifts?

How Often Should I Have My Lift Serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend getting your lift serviced at least once a year in order to keep it running smoothly and performing properly, but if your lift is used frequently or you notice any issues, more frequent checks may be necessary. Think of your lift like you would any other mechanical tool or object you have in your home (even like your car!). All of these tools require regular checks by a knowledgeable and qualified professional to keep them from breaking down or malfunctioning.

What Should I Do If My Lift Stops Working?

First, check for more obvious issues. Did you accidentally trip a circuit breaker? Is your lift’s battery dead and needs to be charged? Is there debris on the tracks? These are more minor issues that you can likely solve yourself or have a family member help you with. The owner’s manual is also a great resource when you’re unsure why your lift is not working. If the problem persists, contact your lift provider or a certified technician immediately as some issues can be more complex and even unsafe.

Are Stairlifts and Elevators Safe for Children?

Because stairlifts and elevators are designed for adults and individuals with mobility challenges, children should not operate or ride them without supervision from an adult. Keep in mind, however, that most stairlifts are designed more for adult use and might not be the most suitable solution for your children. We suggest speaking with your certified dealer when making this decision. Elevators might be a better option with the enclosed cabin and space to transport multiple users at once. Home access products may look like fun, but it is important to remember that they can be quite unsafe if used incorrectly. Keep an eye on curious little ones who may want to explore your stairlift or elevator and ask about any additional safety options.
